Choosing your wedding venue is a huge deal. It’s expensive and it will set the tone for your entire wedding. Researching and choosing the right venue for you can be overwhelming so check out these 5 tips for previewing a venue.
1. Make Appointments
Make sure to schedule appointments for each wedding venue you are considering rather than just driving by. A venue may surprise you: the outside is beautiful but the inside might not be what you imagined or you may discover that the space isn’t large enough to hold all of your special people. To be efficient and still enjoy the experience, book your appointments for at least one hour and group visits by geographic area so you can easily drive from one place to another without backtracking.
2. Bring a notebook—paper or digital!
“How many people did the ballroom hold?” “Did you notice if the place had a dance floor?” You don’t want to leave your appointments and not be able to recall the important details so I encourage you to use a notebook to keep track of what the venue has to offer.
3. Take pictures
As they say, “a picture is worth 1000 words.” Video and photos are particularly useful for capturing your likes, dislikes and other observations while you’re shooting a wedding venue. Whether you take video or photos just make sure to have a system for matching shots to their respective locations. It can be really easy to confuse images so try and keep them as organized as possible. Oh! And don’t forget to charge those suckers up before heading out the door!
4. File everything
Each venue you visit is going to arm you with pamphlets, menus, rate charts, etc.…so it will be important to develop a system to keep everything neat and organized. If you haven’t created your wedding binder yet to keep you organized and sane through this process go here.
5. Bring a checkbook or credit card
Some of the best wedding venues book a year to 18 months in advance. If you actually fall in love with a location and your date is available, place a deposit to hold the date.
