Traditionally, a wedding cake was an absolute must and your mom would insist upon a “cutting the cake” photo op. But times have changed and if you’re like me you have a huge sweet tooth and want to provide your favorite sweet treat options.
So today we’re checking out 10 of our favorite wedding cake alternatives: from delicious donuts and dainty macarons to retro pies and gourmet cheese cakes, there’s a little something to satisfy all tastes, and surprise and delight your guests!
1. Wedding Doughnuts
With a variety of fillings and a little creativity in terms of presentation, you can have a very cost-effective and pretty wedding cake alternative. Love this idea? Scanway Bakery and Cafe and The Doughnut Stand both offer a wedding service of their gorgeous sweet and sticky delights.
2. Wedding Cookies & Biscuits
The options for wedding cookies are endless from cute and creative to classic and hearty. Cookies can be made in just about any style to suit your theme or venue and look just as good as a wedding cake on a cake stand. Noelle’s The Custom Cookie Company create some of our favorites in The Maritimes.
3. Wedding Cupcakes
A delicate little cupcake decorated to your personal theme is always a crowd pleaser and look great lined on a dessert table. Some of our favorite cupcake makers include: Monkey Cakes, Layers Cakes and Piece O’ Cake Custom Creations.
4. Wedding Cheese Cakes & Cheese Boards
For a savory treat tiered cheese cakes can be disassembled and used as an after dinner cheeseboard or as a tasty wedding cake alternative. This isn’t a trend I have seen often in our area yet but fingers crossed that this will start to catch on with Brides and Grooms. A great cheese paired with your favorite wine is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
5. Wedding Macarons
If there is one sweet treat I heart the most it would be the macaron. The most romantic and feminine of sweet treats macarons are a natural wedding cake alternative. Some of our favorites in the Maritimes include The Chess Piece Patisserie and Cafe, The Rousseau Chocolatier and Le French Fix Pâtisserie.
6. Wedding Dessert Tables
For those of you with a really sweet tooth, a dessert table is a great DIY alternative to just one wedding cake. Line the dessert table with your favorite sweets or ones that have special meaning to you as a couple or family recipes that you hold so dear.

8. Wedding Sweet Table
Proving that inside every grown-up is a little kid, sweet bars (or candy buffets) are remaining super popular at weddings. These can act as a relatively simple wedding DIY project for a friend of family member, with the key being really great signage and styling. The Mr. and I had a candy buffet and it was a great way for us to share some of our favorite things and also provided a fun alternative to traditional wedding favors.

9. Cake Pops
Cake pops make a fantastic alternative to a traditional wedding cake and also make delicious and unique edible favors. Add these adorable sweets to your dessert table for the ultimate stylish bite-sized treat.
10. Wedding Pies
A great alternative if you don’t want cake but still wanted a sweet treat you can slice up and divide to your guests. Popular wedding pie options include classic apple pie, sweet pecan pie and berry wedding pies. Caterers can often help you with this wedding cake alternative, or you could always DIY if your venue allows.
