MORE ABOUT JESSICA
Tell us a little bit about your company and how you got started.
My husband and I purchased Bella Promessa four years ago after I had been managing the boutique for the previous owner for two years. We moved it to a new location and really focused on creating an intimate boutique environment for our brides. We’ve been able to connect with some top designers that are new to The Maritimes, it’s so fun being able to introduce our brides to products they haven’t seen before!
When a bride walks in to Bella Promessa they will be greeted with a smile and hopefully they will leave feeling like they’ve made a new friend. We take a minute to sit down with each bride and go over some questions about her big day (where she’s getting married, size and feel of the wedding, etc.) before we begin picking dresses. Once we get an idea of what the bride is looking for one of the consultants will go through the gowns with her and chose some styles that would be suitable. It’s certainly a bonus when a bride is willing to step outside of her comfort zone and try on styles she maybe hadn’t thought of before, more often than not they surprise themselves and fall in love with something they hadn’t even pictured themselves in!
What are some of the things you take into consideration when selecting what bridal designers to carry in your boutique?
We love supporting local Canadian businesses and are thrilled to be able to carry Canadian designers (Lis Simon) and gowns that are made in Canada (Mikaella and Paloma Blanca) that you cannot get anywhere else in New Brunswick. We love having Allure Bridals as they have such a large collection that there’s something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for a fitted lace gown or a blingy ballgown, Allure will have you covered. We really enjoy going on our buying trips to New York and Chicago, it’s a great opportunity to be able to see the new styles that are coming out and be able to stay on top of the trends.
What should a Bride look for when selecting a bridal boutique to work with?
She should look at a boutique that has a variety of different styles to choose from and somewhere that will make her and her group feel comfortable and welcome.
How do you handle a Bride, who has no idea what she wants in a wedding dress?
Those are actually my favorite brides because they’re almost like a blank canvas. It’s wonderful to come in with an idea of what you want, but it’s also great to be open to trying anything on. Often times the consultants have seen the gowns on many girls of different shapes and sizes so we know what looks good on what body type. If you’re unsure of what you want it’s best to try a few different silhouettes to begin with and once you’ve narrowed down a style then you can try on similar designs. Try not to rule anything out before you’ve tried it on, as I said earlier- you may surprise yourself!
What happens if a Bride asks for a particular designer that you don’t carry in your boutique?
We try not to focus too much on individual designers and more on styles and silhouettes. If someone is looking for a certain designer that we don’t carry I will ask if there is a specific gown they were interested in and will pull whatever gown that we have that’s most similar for them to be able to try.
Who should a Bride bring with her when she comes to Bella Promessa?
I know that sometimes it’s tempting to bring ALL of your friends and family with you to your gown appointment but we would definitely suggest limiting it to 3-4 guests. It becomes so overwhelming for you when there are too many opinions involved. This day is about you and what you love so you should bring people with you that have your best interest at heart. Bringing your mother/sister and best friend is usually the best way to go 😉
What trends when it comes to wedding dresses are you seeing among Maritime Brides lately?
Maritime brides are still loving lace, which is wonderful because I don’t think that trend will be going anywhere anytime soon. There’s definitely a more bohemian vibe going on now with flowy gowns, flower crowns, and lace sleeves. There are so many beautiful options out there now, it makes me want to renew my vows just so I can get another dress!
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
The people of The Maritimes are known for being so sweet and we’re really lucky to be able to play a part in someone’s special day. I love getting to know all the brides and hearing all the details of how they fell in love and what they will be doing to say “I do”.
What advice would you give a newly engaged Bride about how to begin her gown selection journey?
My advice would be to come to your appointment with an open mind and an encouraging group of friends. This process can become overwhelming if you try on too many gowns, so don’t be afraid to “say yes to the dress” when you find the one you love!
