Tell us a little bit about your company and how you got started.
I offer mobile services to Atlantic Canada for many occasions with a focus on weddings.
Since I was young, I loved trying new things with makeup, and would apply makeup for my friends and family. I never imagined it would be something I’d have the opportunity to do for weddings, but I loved it so much that I decided to become a professional artist. I attended Medes the first year they offered the course specializing in makeup, and I quickly realized I had made the right decision—I absolutely love getting to do wedding makeup and seeing the bride start ‘feeling like a bride’.
What is your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the services I provide is getting to see someone be in awe at how they look while they feel more beautiful than they imaged. The intention is never to completely alter a bride’s appearance, but to best enhance her natural features for the most polished version of herself, and that is one of my favourite things about being the artist for brides and their parties. I love ‘taking care’ of the bridal party while they sit in my studio chair.
What makes you different from others in your field?
Many brides have told me how easy I am to deal with as a vendor because of my follow-ups, confirmations, and detailed responses—I don’t leave you guessing with anything. I encourage feedback during the consultation to ensure that I’m using the right techniques based on what the bride is looking for. Each bride has her own style, and it’s so important to accommodate this by asking the right questions to better understand the style she wants—this is something I make sure to do, even if it means taking the time to tweak the look to figure out exactly what she wants!
Many testimonials tell me that my expertise with products, sanitization practices, and approachable personality set me apart and would make them tell others about their experience with me.
What is your ideal client like?
Some brides know exactly what they want for makeup right down to where they want their liner a little thicker, and some know next to nothing about makeup, and both are just fine—it’s my job to accommodate.
However, the two most important elements that make them an ideal bride is if they can 1) trust me, and more importantly, 2) give feedback. I emphasize that feedback is not negative. Alternately, it gives me the opportunity to perfectly master what you may have in mind. After all, that’s the fun part!
If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favourite, and why?
I literally love and look forward to being the artist for weddings. I’ve done makeup for prom, graduations, film, fitness competitions, and those are great, but I love doing a bride and her party. I genuinely love being apart of such a special day and watching the bride assess her complete look and start to feel like “OK, this is really happening”. It’s always a special time, and I’m always eager to see the pictures!
Any great stories from working with a client?
I have many great stories, but it is always a pleasure when I get a thank you card in the mail from brides with kind words saying they loved their makeup and that they loved having me as their artist. It’s always sweet when a bride has taken the time to write a thank you card even after the service is complete.
One bride stands out because I didn’t know her outside of being her makeup artist, and she was so happy with her makeup that she started crying and gave me a big, warm hug (good thing it’s waterproof).
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see Brides leave behind?
One of my favourite application requests is when a bride wants soft eyes with dramatic lashes. For example, keeping the eye shadow very light, even glowy, on the lid and a subtle taupe in the crease with slightly more dramatic liner and long, full lashes is a stunning and timeless look. This also pairs perfectly with a slight pop of colour on the lips or a full, red lip.
One trend that I’d like to see brides leave behind is the big, bold brow. I’m actually quite a fan of the brow trend, but it’s just that—a trend. I will accommodate almost any look, but I will warn you to think of your pictures in 10 and 20 years down the road.
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
One of my favourite things about Maritime weddings is the locations you can find for pictures; we live in a beautiful part of the country, and I am often blown away by the photographs couples can get around here with our landscapes. Another thing I love are the people. I can happily say that ‘bridezillas’ are a rare occurrence around here, and the Maritime brides tend to be so ‘chill’, even when something isn’t going as planned.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?
Before the heavy planning/booking stage, decide what elements are most important to you; make sure you allocate whatever time or budget necessary to make your most important elements happen/look/feel just the way you want—no regrets.
