Candace Snowdon Photography loves working with brides and grooms who are joyful, open-minded and fully trusting her to capture their day. Candace loves beautiful portraits but her favorite images are usually intimate, authentic moments of connection between the couple and their loved ones. She strives to capture the moments of love and joy that tell the story of a couple’s wedding day, creating images that they will cherish for many years.
Tell us about your company and how you got started.
Once my youngest daughter started middle school I was ready to get back into the workforce and wanted something I could have control over the hours I worked. I have always loved photography and that was the start of this amazing business, though I do have to credit my husband who is my business partner and handles that side of it for me. Not a very thrilling start but I have never been happier and love photographing weddings.
What makes your work unique? Why should couples hire you?
I’m not sure my work is unique but I have a very distinct style in my editing. I love a clean edit and love documenting the day as it unfolds. I don’t direct very much of the day and love letting it naturally flow. One of the few areas I do consider somewhat unique is my love of night photography with my wedding couples. I always try and find a few minutes once it gets dark outside to sneak off with the couple and create some amazing art for them.
What is your ideal client like?
I haven’t really ever considered that question in depth before. I guess I would have to say, first and foremost, I want them to love my style of photography. I love couples who are open minded and willing to trust some of my crazy sounding ideas.
How do you describe your shooting style? Are you laid back or aggressive? Do you tell the whole story of the day?
My shooting style would most likely be described as laid back as I love to let the day progress naturally. I do get firm at certain times, during the family portraiture, for example, to keep us on schedule as much as we can. Depending on which package my couples purchase I love to document the entire day; from the bride getting ready straight through to the dance at the end of the evening.
How do you make Brides and Grooms feel relaxed in front of the camera?
I find my personality helps out in this situation as I am not afraid to do something silly to generate a genuine smile. I will never ask anyone in front of my camera to smile; when I want a smile I will make them smile, or laugh or even giggle a bit.
What trends when it comes to wedding photography are you seeing among Maritime couples lately?
The biggest trend I have noticed is personalization. Couples want to really bring their personalities into the day with pets, planes (yes I have done that), cars, books and so much more.
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
While it’s natural that weddings are a time for families to be together, weddings in the Maritimes seem to have an atmosphere of family game night; a gathering of two families sharing the love they have for each other and entwining those families with a ceremony of joining them.
Which wedding venues in The Maritimes do you love and why?
Oh that’s a tough one! There are so many that I love and they are all so very different. Lily Lake Pavilion as the light is amazing inside and they have this beautiful walkway that works perfectly for night photography. The Diamond Jubilee (cruise ship terminal) has an amazing rooftop deck that overlooks Saint John. La Teraz in Moncton is an incredible location with a cute little outdoor pool with a gazebo which is perfect for the ceremony or first dance.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to book their wedding photographer?
Research and more research! It is so easy to select your photographer based on cost but unfortunately it’s also just as easy to be misled and your wedding day is not a day to regret your choice of photographer. Be sure the quality of work you are looking for is there with consistency to ensure you won’t be disappointed with your decision.
