MORE ABOUT SHANNON
Tell us about your company and how you got started.
I have been an artist all my life but a photographer for 14 years. It all began after 9 years (almost 10) studying and practicing photography at NSCAD, when I began to see that I wanted to build a professional portrait photography business. I had experience photographing other artists work, headshots, and photographing school pictures but I needed something more my own and more creative. I know photography, I know relationships, & I have always been fascinated by people. All I wanted & want to do is photography, work with people and it has been a labor of love getting to where I am now. Making meaningful connections is how I measure my success.
What makes your work unique? Why should couples hire you?
My work, my photography stems from my love of classic movies and the hopelessly romantic. I have always been a softy for stories of true love & the attraction between people. I translate what I learn about the couple’s connection into soft & sensitive images and tell your story, the “story about us”.
I see every client as a new friendship; I want them know me, trust me and so I put myself out there. I connect with my clients, get them engaged in the photo process, explain clearly what they can expect from the start to the delivery of product. It is a valuable investment and I appreciate that.
What is your ideal client like?
The ideal client for me is a client who has a vision of their wedding day and knows what they are looking for. A client who believes in the value of professional photography and contributes to the experience by enjoying every moment. I love clients who are slightly hard to please, thank you for the challenge, and yet open to trying new things appealing to my creative side.
How do you describe your shooting style? Are you laid back or aggressive? Do you tell the whole story of the day?
Well, I would describe my shooting style as soft, playful and unobtrusive. I am quietly catching every moment as it unfolds and maintaining a timeline, so structure is just as important as being creative & flexible. I am definitely more laid back, aggressive doesn’t suit me at all! I’m also addicted to taking photographs, so when I have a session or a wedding, you can expect me to stretch out the experience to the fullest! Photographers are like silent facilitators of photo opportunity’s; they are educated in seeing and anticipating your big day so that is what I do. I document and make opportunities happen for great portraits.
How do you make couples feel relaxed in front of the camera?
Before I meet most of my clients for the first time I will talk to them on the phone, to learn about their relationship or family and share some personal details to make a connection. I think I am the most awkward person in front of a camera, so I bring a super relaxed energy and encourage having fun. I demonstrate the pose or gesture that I need them to do, I do not force a pose; I like it to come together naturally. I am also very good at flattery, and giving a positive experience.
What trends when it comes to wedding photography are you seeing among Maritime couples lately?
Creating new traditions and including moments such as; The first look, is one situation I have only experienced twice, but see more of it being requested. It’s a cute and fun private moment for the Bride & Groom to take a breath of each other before the excitement. Photo booths at receptions are also doing well. The candid playful shots with the bride & groom! It is fun for the whole celebration! More personal touches and I LOVE it!
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
Not to take this the way off the map, but it is not the “I do’s”, it is the careful preparation of hair, long looks in the mirror, the cigar with a best friend, the tux that fits just right, tears of joy from great grandmothers, family, friends celebrating & dancing. The ceremony is important, don’t get me wrong, but I enjoy what comes before & after so much more. I take pleasure in the details. The history & strong family connections are also some of my favorite moments.
Which wedding venues in The Maritimes do you love and why?
Maritimer’s do it right! Lots of great hospitality & choices. But I love golf courses & getaways! Outdoors and removed from the chaos of city life. Everything located in one sweet spot. White Point Beach Lodge was such a gorgeous venue and staff were great to work with. I love to be near the water and have options for different photo locations. I also thought the Ashburn Golf Course Ballroom was a beautiful venue and still close to the city, hotels, churches & photo locations.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to book their wedding photographer?
Well, there is a fantastic selection of very talented professionals to speak with in the Maritimes. Take the time to meet them and ask to see a wedding portfolio from start to finish. Find a photographer who’s images you love & who’s attitude matches yours. You truly want to connect with the photographer you choose.
