MORE ABOUT MEGAN
Tell us about your company and how you got started.
I never dreamed I’d be a wedding photographer. I didn’t ever think I’d be a photographer at all. Growing up I always had a camera in hand and had to capture everything that was happening, but it was never something I thought about as a career. It wasn’t until I had my first baby that I realized how much I really loved photography. I was gifted my first dSLR and spent every minute of my spare time taking photos of my baby and reading anything I could in order to learn how to improve my skills.
Pretty soon friends starting asking me to take their photos and it all just snowballed from there. Shortly after that a friend of mine was getting married and asked me to take her wedding photos. I immediately told her “”no, but she wore me down until I gave in. After that first wedding, I was hooked and I never looked back. A few weddings later my husband, Shawn, joined in as my second shooter. He accompanies me to all of my weddings and adds a really nice balance to every wedding day.
What makes your work unique? Why should couples hire you?
Couples should hire me if they are looking for a balance of documentary style photography and some simple posing. I want to capture everything as it happens without my clients feeling the pressure of having to pose all the time. My couples also love that I bring my husband along for the wedding day. This is especially convenient for the getting ready photos since I can take care of the ladies while Shawn takes care of the men. It also gives our couples two different perspectives on their wedding day and gives some extra insurance that no moment is missed.
What is your ideal client like?
My ideal couple wants beautiful and relaxed wedding photos. They are fun and not afraid to show how in love they are. I love it when my couples are totally comfortable with snuggling up, being in the moment, having a good time, and just enjoying each other. I want to work with couples who can relax and really enjoy their day. I also think it’s really important that my clients really trust me as their photographer. I want them to love my style and know that I can capture their day in a way that works for them.
How do you describe your shooting style? Are you laid back or aggressive? Do you tell the whole story of the day?
I am definitely more laid back and quiet. For the most part, I like to stay in the background, sneaking around and getting the shots that I need. I work very hard to make sure that I’m not taking any attention away from the real stars of the show. My goal is for my clients to be completely comfortable and go through the natural motions of the day without ever having to worry about me. I love to tell the whole story of the day and I try to capture all of the little moments that my couples might not even realize are happening at the time. I try not to do any posing, other than during the formal portraits time of the day, when my goal is to gently guide everyone to where they need to be.
How do you make couples feel relaxed in front of the camera?
I try to get to know my couples as much as possible before the wedding. I always encourage an engagement session so that we can have the chance to work together and spend some time with each other before the big day comes along. I also try to keep posing pretty casual and fun so that no one feels stiff or awkward but give my couples enough direction so they’re not left wondering what to do.
What trends when it comes to wedding photography are you seeing among Maritime couples lately?
I’ve noticed that many weddings are taking a more casual and nontraditional turn. Full tuxes are getting traded in for simple shirts and vests, more interesting wedding ceremony locations are popping up, and more brides and grooms opting to see each other (and do some first look photos) before the wedding. Oh, and late night snack bars seem to be really popular too.
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
I always love how friendly and welcoming the families are. I’m always made to feel at home and well taken care of during the day. And of course, I also love the interesting backdrops that the Maritimes can provide. There is so much variety and so much beauty that we often don’t pay attention to.
Which wedding venues in The Maritimes do you love and why?
One of my favourite venues here in the Moncton area is The Cocoa Room. It is always gorgeous and I love that couples have the option to have their ceremony inside or riverfront on the back deck. I also love Blueberry Hill Farms in Petitcodiac because of its rustic charm and country vibe. Magnetic Hill Winery is also a favourite – it’s just so beautiful, scenic, and romantic. My most recent wedding was actually at center ice at the Moncton Coliseum, so that was really cool. I always love to do something different!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to book their wedding photographer?
You have to follow your heart. Look at a lot of photos, browse through a lot of photographers. Find someone whose style speaks to you. Once you know what you like, make sure to meet up and see if your personalities are a good fit. Ditch the “what to ask your photographer” checklist and ask what you want to ask. You’ll know when you find someone who is a good fit for you.

Favorite wedding flower?
Favorite first dance song you’ve heard?
I’m not even sure what the song was, but one of my brides was a singer so their first dance song was actually a recording of her singing to her new husband. I don’t think there was a dry eye around!
