Can you believe that we are already two weeks into 2017? It’s like we’ve been sucked into some sort of time warp or something!? Time sure flies when you’re having fun and speaking of fun, let’s talk about something super fun-wedding trends!
Wedding season brings new and exciting trends that either grow and develop over the season, or fade out as quickly as they arrive.
I’m going to put myself totally out on a limb here and make my predictions for the hottest wedding trends of 2017. I stalked top fashion bloggers, interior designers, and even checked out local wedding Facebook groups for inspiration to narrow the top 15 things that I think will have the biggest impact this year. So, in no particular order, here’s the top 15 trends that I think (hope!) we will see in 2017 weddings!
1. Foodie Focus
More and more we are seeing people steering away from the traditional full course meals and offering their guests a variety of creative food choices. It’s a way for couples to customize their wedding day and provide guests with a menu that really showcases who they are as a couple. I love how couples are not only offering multiple options but they are also getting creative with their selections. From interactive food stations, food trucks, cute passed hors d’oeuvres, to late-night snacks, I think we will continue to see it all in 2017!
2. Local Specialties
Local specialties will inspire wedding menus this year and create memorable meals. Couples will source ingredients from their wedding locale and make them the focal point in their food setup. From local seafood, wine, beer, favors like locally made honey, and flowers grown in our region it gives a nod to local makers and exposes guests to the couple’s favorite products.
3. Alternative Desserts
Traditionally, a wedding cake was an absolute must and your mom would insist upon a “cutting the cake” photo op. But times have changed and if you’re like me you have a huge sweet tooth and want to provide your favorite sweet treat options. My bet is that we will see many couples embracing alternative cakes and we will see everything from delicious donuts and dainty macarons to retro pies and gourmet cheese cakes. There’s a little something to satisfy all tastes and surprise and delight your guests!

4. Drip Cakes
Not everyone will completely forgo tradition and nix the cake but that doesn’t mean they won’t get creative with it. Forget “naked” cakes, the cake that’s taking the internet by storm is the drip cake. This fun approach to traditional style wedding cakes makes a huge and colorful statement that is all about the fun. These funky cakes are made by drizzling chocolate, caramel or a sweet ganache over top of the cake so that it drips over the edge. Seriously sweet and oh so fun, these cakes will have your guests’ mouths watering.
5. Old-Time Classics
In 2017, mixologists will move away from the very sweet in favor of old-time classics like the Moscow mule, a Pimm’s Cup (one of my faves!), and the sidecar. A classic beer will never fall off an East Coast couple’s bar menu but expect to see local craft beers as they continue to take our region by storm.
Every year Pantone releases a color of the year, a color which dictates the way for color trends in fashion, home décor and my absolute favorite weddings. This year, the official Pantone Color of the Year for 2017 is greenery and I expect to see a trend towards using more and more garland and greenery in décor. We started to see this trend last year but my bet is that we will see this trend make a huge statement in 2017, whether that means draping greenery across an altar piece or running it down farmhouse tables we will see a lack of color in favor of using greenery.

7. Vertical Impact
Couples are using vertical space above tables or dance floors in order to make a statement. Options include low hanging florals, hanging lights, tall taper candles, or elaborate chandeliers. This is a trend I can’t wait to flood my Instagram feed!
8. Precious Stones & Gems
Although expensive, I LOVE how this trend blends together popular wedding themes; glam and boho. Raw gems and rocks such as agate and geodes have become super popular with couples incorporating them on their cake, name cards, and wedding stationery.
I think gold and silver will always be the top metallic choice, but there’s a new metallic that is sure to make its appearance this year. Copper details started to pop up in creative ways last year but I think it’ll be 2017 that it really makes its impact, from glamorous centerpiece vases to pretty chair signs and copper foil invitations. Copper is extremely versatile- polished copper can look glamorous and elegant, but matte or aged copper lend a rustic or vintage feel.
10. Unexpected Seating
As we see a rise in more interactive weddings the more we’ll see unique seating arrangements. For example, I predict that we will see King’s table incorporated in many weddings which is a beautiful and elegant way to make a head table bigger and better. A King’s table is a large table in the middle of the room for the entire bridal party and their guests. This gives it a more intimate feel as well as more social. Everyone sits face to face so there are more people to interact with.
In addition to King’s table, I think we’ll see more Harvest Tables and Sweetheart Tables which allows the bride and groom to spend some alone time together at a small intimate table just for them.

11. Feeling Charitable
Wedding flowers aren’t just expensive, they sadly also tend to end up in the trash after the big day is over. A new trend, which I REALLY hope becomes a big trend in 2017 is flower recycling might just put an end to that. Couples want to be able to be able to give back to others and not see their flowers go to waste. If you want to donate your wedding day flowers, reach out to local hospitals, senior living homes, friends, family, or even neighbors. There will always be something who would love to have some beautiful blooms.

In 2017, we will see technology be more incorporated in weddings than ever before. Couples will find new ways to integrate technology into their wedding by taking advantage of things like custom Snapchat filters, 3D printing to personalize their cake toppers, slo-mo booths, selfie sticks on tables, and more. More and more will use technology and apps to help them with the entire wedding planning process.

13. Get Guests Involved
Finding ways to entertain and involve guests is often the number #1 priority for couples. As such, we will see a rise of experiential weddings. Weddings that include and engage their guests rather than having them just watch the proceedings. For example, interactive, food stations and lawn games are great for encouraging engagement, as is unique entertainment (think dancers or artists), which will wow your guests and give everyone something to talk about.
I think we will see the rise in couples having guests join them as they walk down the aisle, while other couples pass their wedding bands around so everyone has a chance to touch them and be a part of the special moment. Not only are these meaningful ways that guests can feel like they are a part of the special day, but it’s a way for the couple to look back and remember all of the love and support they had from their favorite people.

14. Culture and Tradition
Infusing the location, culture or family and honoring that heritage will become more and more prevalent in weddings in 2017. Many of us are close to our families and want to find ways to incorporate that into our weddings somehow. Asking family members to offer readings and blessings, duplicate readings in different languages, or adapt ceremonies to celebrate their heritage are just some of the ways to subtly acknowledge parents and family by honoring your heritage.

Hand calligraphy is a strong trend that we will see continue through 2017. For the brave, you can learn how to do it yourself, hire an amazing calligrapher, or lean on your stationer to make your invitation suite look hand-calligraphed.
And there you have it, the top 15 2017 wedding trends that I predict will be huge ! It’s been a ridiculously fun coming up with this list and I can’t wait to see what 2017 truly holds!
