MORE ABOUT SINEAD
Tell us about your company and how you got started.
I was 11 or 12 when I got my first camera, and I brought it everywhere. I was lucky to grow up with a family that traveled frequently, and I loved capturing the amazing places we would visit. A few years later, I saved up all the money I made from my summer job and bought my first DSLR, started taking portraits of my friends… and something just clicked!
The connection you make while taking someone’s photograph is an extraordinary thing. This culminated in creating Sinead Dubeau Photography almost 7 years ago, with a focus on portraiture. Over the past few years, it’s blossomed and evolved into the busy business it is today, with a focus on boudoir and wedding photography. My assistant Kate Mosher and I are heading into our busiest season yet and I couldn’t be happier. I feel so lucky to do what I love for a living!
What makes your work unique? Why should couples hire you?
We pride ourselves on producing images that capture honest, natural emotion – from teared-up “first looks” to nervous giggles during the ceremony, we capture the most memorable moments of your wedding day as it unfolds. We are very engaged with our couples; we’re always laughing and making jokes and we like to promote a more relaxed feel – we want the photographs to be one of the most fun parts of the day, not a source of stress. Although we do assist with posing, we really just set the stage for the couple’s personality to shine through. Each of our packages includes an exceptional mix of candid images along with classic portraits and “must have” shots; we provide images that will be cherished for generations to come.
What is your ideal client like?
We love people in love! Just like the couples we work with, every wedding has a distinct style and personality. We love couples who are comfortable being themselves and who welcome us to capture every emotion on their big day. We have been lucky to have some absolutely fantastic clients over the years, which makes our job fun! That said… if anyone wants to hire us for for a destination wedding in Costa Rica or Bali, then hey, who are we to say no?
How do you describe your shooting style? Are you laid back or aggressive? Do you tell the whole story of the day?
Although photography is a huge part of any wedding day, we put an emphasis on comfort and relaxation. We want our clients and their families to spend their time enjoying the day! We highly recommend taking advantage of the included engagement session and consultation because it helps us get to know you, your style, and your comfort levels in front of the camera. This lets us to be extra prepared for your wedding day, and spending time with us beforehand allows you to be more comfortable letting your honest emotions show on your wedding day – which results in the best images.
During posed portraits, we use clear communication and consistent coaching with the couple, family, and friends to ensure that we can capture gorgeous photos while taking up the least amount of your time (so you can get back to cocktail hour!). The rest of the day, we take an unobtrusive approach; I affectionately refer to Kate as our little “photo ninja”, because while I may be working on posing with the couple, she’s in another area shooting some of the most beautiful, candid moments of the day. Telling the whole story of the day is, essentially, what wedding photography should really be. We are there with you every step of the way – from getting ready with your bridesmaids, pre-wedding whiskey with the groomsmen, nervous glances during the ceremony, first dances with your partner or your parent, and every moment in between. We photograph the laughter, tears, and the little details that show the individuality of your wedding.
How do you make couples feel relaxed in front of the camera?
We get it – being in front of the camera, especially for an extended period of time like on your wedding day, can feel weird and awkward. Because we want you to be comfortable, we spend a lot of time getting to know you and your needs, and we try to keep a time limit in mind when it comes to posed portraits. This way, we limit the time spent away from your guests, and we capture all of the romantic, timeless images before you get too tired of posing! When I have a consultation with the bride and groom, I like to go over the schedule and make sure that they leave an appropriate amount of time for photos (you’ll feel better if you’re not rushed), and honestly, have a few minutes to themselves. It’s so important.
What trends when it comes to wedding photography are you seeing among Maritime couples lately?
A wedding photography trend that I am absolutely loving lately is going back to nature; many couples are choosing to have non-traditional ceremonies in natural environments. The Maritimes has so many beautiful locations to offer, like wineries, national parks, beaches, and valleys… How amazing is it that you can choose to get married by a waterfall? This extends to decor, too. We’re seeing lots of greenery, wildflowers, and foliage incorporated into wedding decorating.
What is your favorite thing about weddings in The Maritimes?
One of my favourite things would be how many couples want to incorporate the ocean and their hometown in their wedding, either by having a seaside ceremony or a reception with a cityscape view. There’s also a distinct personality with Maritime weddings; they’re warm, welcoming, and simultaneously silly and sincere. We become a part of the family almost immediately, and I love that.
Which wedding venues in The Maritimes do you love and why?
Honestly, living in the Maritimes offers so many choices for venues that it’s tough to narrow down the ones I love most! Right now, I am really into winery weddings. Not just because the wine is fantastic, but because the Valley offers a lot of diversity for images because of the proximity to the ocean as well as gardens like the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens or the Tangled Gardens.
I also love true East Coast weddings in or around fishing villages like Lunenburg and Peggy’s Cove – the heritage homes, the colors, and the ocean scenes make for some very stunning and unique wedding shots. One of the most interesting weddings we shot last season had the ceremony at Common Roots Urban Farm in Halifax (the first one ever held there!) and the reception at the new Halifax Library. The bride and groom actually grew their own wedding flowers in their community garden plot, and it was such a beautiful place to celebrate. Using the 5th floor of the library was a wonderful idea; we were easily able to steal a few moments on the rooftop for sunset portraits, and the big, open windows filled the location with light – every photographer’s dream!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to book their wedding photographer? You should look for a photographer who suits the look you’re searching for. Every photographer has their own personality and shooting style, so make sure it aligns with your vision! Ask to see examples of everything, from the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, candids, reception – it’s important to know that your photographer can handle a variety of different lighting and other situations. Never be afraid to ask questions; your photographer should want to help you plan and research different ideas for your wedding day. Most importantly, when you’ve found someone you like, book early! Wedding photographers can be booked more than a year in advance, so as soon as you know your date, confirm your booking.
