Taking a good selfie requires some mad skills but taking a picture of your left hand? Well, that’s almost down right impossible. If you’ve ever tried you’ll know what I’m taking about. The hand is not the most photogenic body part. It often looks awkward, stumpy, spindly, and in winter, it has a habit of looking a purplish shade of blue.
So, if you’re newly engaged (congrats by the way!) – I’ve put together a few tips and ideas for snapping your all-important engagement ring selfie pic…
1. Treat Yourself to a Manicure
First up, every newly engaged gal should treat herself to a mani. Not only will your hands look great, but the self-care is fun and relaxing! Whether you go for classic red, a nude hue (I’m obsessed with OPI’s Bubble Bath), or add a little sparking, a fresh mani will add instant style to your engagement ring selfie.
2. Grab a Prop
If you’re like me and don’t like the look of your hand in pictures, go ahead and use props so it looks more natural. Starbucks coffee cups, mugs of tea, flowers, a bridal magazine or glasses of champagne all make great things to hold in a picture and add more interest to the photo.
3. Relax Your Hand
A stiff hand will look weird and unflattering in pictures. Hand models know just how to keep their hand loose in pictures, so if you can, try to relax your hand so your shot looks a little more natural.
4. Get Some Help
So I know it’s supposed to be a selfie, but if you’re having a really hard time (or feeling silly!) about taking your own picture, why not rope in your other half to help. It might end up as an even sweeter shot.
5. Catch the Sparkle
Ah, the sparkle of an engagement ring! Once you’ve received your ring, you’ll want to show it off. A Boomerang is a fun way to catch the sparkle in your diamond, likewise stand close to a window or in the sunlight and let natural light work its magic.
6. Lighting is everything.
7. A Pretty Background
The options here are almost endless. Whether it’s an epic sunset, a beautiful beach, or atop a skyscraper, pose your hand against a nice backdrop and it will add more context to your photo. Bonus points if you say “yes” somewhere unique.
8. Keep it Candid
Rather than copying something you’ve seen online, stay true to you and in the moment and grab a photo of you and your Fiancé with that sparkler. Everyone is going to be so excited for you and an impromptu snap will be a lot more authentic than taking tonnes of pictures of your hand to get the perfect picture.
9. Fix it before you post.
Whatever you do, keep it fun! And don’t feel pressured to post your ring if you don’t want to. This is a time of celebration and you can choose however you’d like or not like to let everyone know your happy news.
