You know, I figured that it was time I wrote a blog post dedicated to wedding officiants. I’m always babbling about how important it is to finding your rockstar vendors, and I’ve mentioned how important it is to find your officiant, but I haven’t actually laid it all out in a blog post!
The officiant is one of the MVPs of your big day and it’s essential to make sure you have the right one by asking some essential questions. So, before you start signing any paperwork, make sure you have found the right one for you by asking them these key questions to get to know them and their work.
Are you available on my wedding date?
First things first. Begin at the beginning by asking your desired officiant if they’re available on your wedding date. You’ll want to make sure that they’re available before moving the conversation any further. If they aren’t available on your day, don’t get too upset. They may have some suggestions of other officiants that may work.
Will you be able to perform a wedding at my desired venue?
This is a biggie because some officiants will only perform ceremonies at particular houses of worship. If you’re planning on having an outdoor wedding at your family home, but your desired officiant won’t perform outside of his or her church, you’ll need to consider other options.
Are you licensed to perform a ceremony in the province we’re getting married in?
So, the officiant is available and they are able to marry you at your venue then what’s next? The next step is finding out if they are legally allowed to marry you. Different provinces have different rules, so you’ll want to check on your province’s governmental site for further details. Here are the quick links to get you started:

- Prince Edward Island
- Nova Scotia
- New Brunswick
- British Columbia
- Northwest Territories

How much do you charge?
I know if you’re at this point in the planning process you’ve established your budget. Riiiiight? If so, you should have factored in your officiant into your budget. Rates differ from province to province and depend on the type of officiant you’re hiring. You’ll need to ask how much they charge so you can budget accordingly.
How many times should we meet before the ceremony?
This varies from officiant to officiant so it’s best to have expectations set from the beginning. Some will want to give premarital counselling sessions while others may only need to meet with you one or two times before your big day.
How much can we personalize our ceremony?
If you’re interested in writing your own vows you’d definitely want to ask the potential officiant this question. Some officiants are happy to collaborate but others like to stick to the books. If you’re interested in personalizing your ceremony in any way, make sure to ask about it.

What happens in case of an emergency?
Ohhh this is a biggie and one you should ask all of your vendors. You don’t want your big day to be ruined if your potential officiant suddenly becomes sick or can’t perform your ceremony. Having a backup plan for this MVP vendor is an absolute must. Make sure with this potential officiant that there is a fallback plan in place any issue comes up.
